Se'von
Son of a soldier, Se’von moved around much of his childhood, finally settling in Detroit and ghetto suburb of Mount Clemens, MI. Dodging dealers, boosters, and thugs, Se’von managed to run in the streets without allowing them to determine who he would become. In a single parent home, the temptations of the hood began to get the best of him; needing somewhere to turn… he turned to music.
At the 2004 Rapvibe Summit in Chicago, Se’von wowed an audience of artists and industry A&R’s, producers and promoters; a showcase that catapulted his name into the mouths and ears of some of the most well-known industry heads in the game. In 2006, Se’von was nominated “Best Male Artist” for the 2006 Detroit Hip Hop Music Awards.
Bringing a true feeling back to hip hop music, Se’von encompasses the thoughts, feelings, struggles and ideals of people of many backgrounds. He has sold over 6,000 units with virtually no promotion besides word of mouth. As a measuring stick, Se’von welcomes the challenge of sharing the stage with multi-platinum acts.
ONETEN Magazine: When did you first discover you wanted to make music your career?
My mother was in a gospel when I was a kid called “Joy & Peace” my sister as well... so when I started experimenting with music I thought I was supposed to be a singer, I soon found out I wasn’t supposed to be that …I discovered poetry…published a few poems in some books… just added my story and music to the poetry.
ONETEN Magazine: You have a unique style and sound, from where do you draw your influences?
I’m an r&b dude at heart, I just happen to rhyme better than I sing. I have always loved the feeling that real soulful r&b/ gospel gave you, so my challenge was creating pure/ mainstream hip hop that mimicked that feeling.
ONETEN Magazine: Describe your personal style in five words:
Passionate + Big + Worldwide + Lyrical + Truth
ONETEN Magazine: What are some of the challenges you see you have to overcome to get to the next level?
Rap doesn’t seem to lend itself (nowadays) to just one hip hop artist with one mic, instead, it’s a clique/crew/group onstage talking about EVERYTHING they believe the listeners want to hear instead of writing/performing what the listeners want AND need to hear, that’s a challenge.
ONETEN Magazine: In 2006, you were nominated “Best Male Artist” for the 2006 Detroit Hip Hop Music Awards. How was that experience?
It was very flattering and humbling, not a lot of people know but the Detroit Music Awards is a very big deal. That particular time I was nominated Eminem performed and Kid Rock performed as well, so for my name to be mentioned in a city where solo rappers outnumber the police and public high students combined I felt empowered.
ONETEN Magazine: Tell us about some of the things you currently have in the works?
Currently we are working out the marketing campaign for my latest project the “INK” album preceded by the “My Life Your Movie” L.P.
ONETEN Magazine: What do you consider to be your strengths and weaknesses?
I’ll just name my weaknesses for all the haters that subscribe to your mag.
I write for a lot of other artists as well as for myself so I’ve long ago abandoned the freestyle cyphers and I currently suck (for the record, anything with the word “free” in it turns me off).
ONETEN Magazine: What artists have you had the opportunity to collaborate with or open for?
I have collaborated with Lyfe Jennings, Dave Hollister, Chingy, Case, Da Brat, Tony Terry and Lathan and some others. I’ve opened or co-headlined for a lot of people some are Lyfe Jennings, Rick Ross, Rich Boy, Jay Z, Kanye, Clipse, Lloyd Banks, Cassidy and a bunch more.
ONETEN Magazine: What other talents or passions do you have and/or want to explore?
I want to get into mentoring, I feel like I’ve been blessed with intelligence and experience, I’m told I have a voice that makes people want to listen to me, I’d like to use that voice to help and improve.
